George E. Holt, 94, of Murphysboro, passed away at 7:08 a.m. Thursday, October 19, 2017, at the Century Assisted Living in Carbondale.
George was born on September 19, 1923, in Murphysboro, to Joseph C. Holt and Anna (Schriner) Holt.
He served from 1941 to 1944 in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Before he retired, George was a Metropolitan Life Insurance Salesman for over thirty years.
Mr. Holt was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro.
He was an avid Cardinal Baseball fan and he enjoyed Blue Grass and Gospel music.
George married Jeanne Burton on October 9, 1944, in Alameda County, California, and she preceded him in death on January 26, 1996.
He is survived by three sons George Richard Holt and his wife Hui-Chaing Chang of Chicago, Mark Holt of Gorham, and David Holt and his wife Cindy Holt of Murphysboro;
four grandchildren Richard E. Holt, Matthew Holt, Christian Holt, and Michelle Holt;
and three great grandchildren Madilynn Holt, Sebastian Holt, and Leif Holt.
He was preceded in death by one grandson Keith Holt, two brothers Joe Holt, Jr. and Jack Holt, one sister Marjorie Hamilton, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jim Frye officiating and burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene or to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc.
